Kvikkjokk

This location is mentioned in the following paragraphs:

(§495) I got silver ore from Nasafjäll here, also the unusual iron ore from Luleå Lappmark that is called Old Man's Silver: still unprospected, formerly exploited a little, now extracted again -gives a 60 percent yield, 7 miles from Kvikkjokk, called Rutivari.

(§534) After much exertion I arrived at JOKKMOKK, which is also the mother church of Kvikkjokk. The pastor lives here.

(§571) 5th. We travelled to KVIKKJOKK and on the way there we had to make a portage (called "mörker" by the people of Umeå, "murki" by the Lapps), during which I saw an abundance of 'Thalactrum minimum' [Alpine Meadow-rue] on the shore. 'Sceptrum Carolinum' [Moor-king] was in flower on the bank, as was 'Aconitum luridum' [Northern Wolfsbane], 'Juncus palustris calamo trifido' [Three-leaved Rush] and 'Viola lutea florens' [Yellow Wood-violet].

(§579) 6th. I left Kvikkjokk in the afternoon and after 1 3/4 miles came to the mountain VALLEVARE, which was easily 1 3/4 miles high. When I reached its slopes I seemed to be led up into a new world and, as I ascended it, I might as well have been in Africa or Asia, for the soil, the situation, and all the plants were unfamiliar to me. I had now arrived in the mountains. All around me lay snow-covered hills and I was walking upon snow as though in the depths of winter. All of the rare plants I had seen before and rejoiced in existed here as if in miniature; what is more, there was such an abundance of them that I was terrified that there were more than I could possibly deal with.

(§739) Arrived at Hyttan [Kvikkjokk].

(§807) The river in Kvikkjokk flows in winter as well as in summer. If the river were melt-water, as people assume, it would not flow in winter when it is so cold in the mountains. It must, therefore, come from springs in the district.

(§839) 23rd. I left the mountain district in the evening, setting off from Kvikkjokk down the Lule river by water.

(§849) There was excellent iron-ore west of Vallevare, halfway to Kvikkjokk, but it would hardly repay the trouble of extracting it because of the difficult route to Luleå.

(§911) The Lule river splits into 2 equally large branches a little above the boundary between Lappmark and Västerbotten: one branch is called the Little Lule river and it reaches the mountains in the direction of Kvikkjokk, the other is called the Great Lule river and it reaches the mountains in Norrbotten.
