Candles are not used by the Lapps even though reindeer tallow is quite suitable for use as candles. It is softer than other tallow and the Lapps store it in bladders and cook it as food. Reindeer, however, do not have much tallow – about the same amount as sheep. They have tallow round the muscles but not between them, whereas oxen and other domestic animals have it between the muscles.
