Skåne

This location is mentioned in the following paragraphs:

(§173) 20th. I saw cows without horns in various places along my way; they are merely a variation on the ordinary ones and not a distinct species. They were not created like this in the beginning even though the horns, their most obvious generic characteristic, are now missing, for the rudiments of them still exist under the skin. In Skåne and elsewhere there are rams with 4, 6 or 8 horns, which, like fully-opened flowers, so to speak, revel in excess.

(§196) There was driftsand by the sea and it is caused, both here and in Skåne, by the loss of the topsoil, after which the wind picks up the fine sand and deposits it all round, thus spoiling the grass.

(§214) In the marsh outside the window I saw a 'Motacilla flava' [Blue-headed Wagtail] and 'Hirundines' [Swallows]. He had also had 'Hortulanes' or snow buntings, which often sell for a ducat in France and can also be got in Skåne. There have been plenty of ruffs this summer.

(§377) As to the forest: if it is extensively felled and birch allowed to grow in its place, then grass will grow better; but where the soil is sour because of the underlying rock, things will become even worse. The sandy heaths are worst of all because, wherever the forest is burned off, only the sand remains and nothing will grow on it for up to 10 or 20 years. It is worth asking whether the forest, if it was felled more and left lying to cover the ground and rot away gradually, might possibly convert into humus. They sow buckwheat on the sand in Skane but that cannot be sown here because of the winter and the cold. It is worth investigating how moss can be eradicated.

(§481) From this grass, as well as from the forests, marshes, fields, meadows, plants and lakes, I could see that this province is very like Småland, and I found quite a lot of plants that do not grow in Uppland, Södermanland, Östergötland or Skåne but do grow in Småland etc.

(§838) Various methods of drying grain:

(§1089) The grassland at LIMINGO extends for 13 miles. The ground is a little higher round the village of Limingo. The best part of it, that which is a little drier and higher though considerably damaged by tussocks, has been taken into use for grazing. If it was cultivated in triple rotation in the Skåne manner, it would produce excellent oats. They said they would be able to ditch and drain the large marshland by the coast but are afraid of white moss which would prevent them getting a crop.
