Ångermanland

This location is mentioned in the following paragraphs:

(§70) There was also a frame, 16 feet in height, for drying corn and peas. All the corn is dried on these up-country, throughout the whole of Hälsingland, Medelpad, Ångermanland and Västerbotten.

(§160)

ÅNGERMANLAND

(§161) Five miles from the inn there lies a small bridge over a little river between 2 small lakes and this marks the boundary between Medelpad and Ångermanland.

(§162) No sooner had I crossed into Ångermanland than the highway began to present gradients of such length and steepness that their descent on horseback could only be ventured with much care.

(§165) In Ångermanland, deciduous woods of 'Betula' [birch] and 'Alnus alba' [Grey Alder] began to compete with the coniferous 'Pinus' [pine] and 'Abietes' [spruce], just as the little 'Vaccinium nigrum' [Blaeberry] competed in places with 'Erica' [Heather], so that a mass of 'Erica' flourished wherever there were bare areas on the hillside whereas in the woods there was 'Vaccinium'.

(§190) I was told that willow does not grow anywhere in the whole of Ångermanland, nor was there any Hazel there. Cherries do not always ripen, potatoes grow well, 'Tabacum' [tobacco] and 'Lupulus' [hop] grow slowly and are rare.

(§203) Before I reached SÖRMJÖLE 11 miles away, there was a river called ÅNGERÅN separating Ångermanland from Västerbotten.

(§207) I did not see any flowers here, not even a single 'Oxys' [Wood Sorrel], my sole cornfort in Ångermanland. There was nothing but 'Caltha' [Marsh Marigold], which is the first flower of spring here, and 'Linagrastis monostachya' [Hare's-tail Cotton Grass] and 'Polystachya' [Common Cotton Grass] which were beginning to open. 'Betula nana' [Dwarf Birch] grew here in great quantities but there was still no sign of catkins or leaves. There was no 'Fraxinus' [ash], 'Acer' [maple], 'Tilia' [lime], 'Ulmus' [elm] nor willow in the whole province, far less hazel, oak and beech.

(§838) Various methods of drying grain:
